Arborist rope has two jobs that fight each other: run predictably through a hitch or device, and survive bark, crotches and grit. Repurposed marine rope does neither well.

What actually governs the spec

Cover firmness and hitch behaviour. A cover that milks down after a season turns a predictable hitch unpredictable. That is a safety problem.

Hitches that grab the same way every time

A 24-strand cover holds its geometry under repeated cinching where a 16-strand flattens. That is a hitch you trust.

Shock loads in the rigging line

Negative-rigging a limb generates peak loads several times the static weight. Rigging line needs controlled elongation. A climbing line sends the spike into the anchor.

Inspection in a dirty environment

Grit works into a cover and abrades from the inside. High-contrast tracers make that wear obvious, so retirement runs on evidence, not a calendar.

10:1 for climbing lines; 5:1 for rigging and lowering lines

A starting point, not a specification. The governing standard, the consequence of failure and the inspection regime all move this number.
