Running rigging, ground tackle and dock lines that survive the season.

A sailing rig is competing requirements pretending to be one problem. Halyards want zero stretch, sheets want clutch grip and a kind hand, dock lines want the opposite plus chafe resistance.

What actually governs the spec

UV exposure and cyclic abrasion, not peak load. Eight months of sun and a rough fairlead beat rated strength to it.

The problems worth solving

Halyards that hold a luff tension

Halyard creep shows up as a soft luff and a slow boat. Parallel-core holds elongation under 0.8% at 30% MBS, and holds it there.

Sheets that a clutch will actually hold

Bare HMPE is too slippery for most clutches and too hard on hands. A polyester or blended cover fixes both at negligible strength cost.

Ground tackle that absorbs a snatch load

An anchor rode's job is to stretch. Three-strand nylon at 14% elongation spares the bow roller and windlass, and it grips a gypsy.

5:1 to 8:1 for running rigging; 8:1 or higher for ground tackle

A starting point, not a specification. The governing standard, the consequence of failure and the inspection regime all move this number.
