Construction atlas

Geometry decides elongation, splice efficiency, torque behaviour and how a rope sits on a drum — all before fibre choice enters the conversation. Here is what each construction actually does.

12-Strand Single Braid

12 strands, braided in pairs

Spliceable · 100%Torque balanced3 products

Torque-free and hand-spliceable in the field with nothing but a fid. The highest strength-to-weight of any spliceable construction.

  • Heavy lift slings
  • Towing pendants

Double Braid

Braided core inside a braided cover

Spliceable · 90%Torque balanced3 products

Core and cover each carry about half the load, and the cover takes all the wear. Firm, round, and the most forgiving construction to splice well.

  • Sheets and halyards
  • Winch lines
  • General deck work
  • Utility hauling

Parallel Core

Unidirectional core in a braided cover

Load-bearing yarns run straight along the axis, not braided, so almost no strength is lost to geometry. The lowest elongation and highest efficiency available.

8-Strand Plaited

Four pairs, plaited

Spliceable · 100%Torque balanced2 products

Two pairs right-laid, two left-laid. Will not kink, hockle or unlay, coils flat, and runs freely off a pile.

Kernmantle

Parallel or twisted core in a tight sheath

A protected core inside a tight sheath engineered for descender grip and sharp-edge abrasion. Knotted, not spliced. Built to life-safety standards, not industrial ones.

3-Strand Twisted

Three twisted strands

Spliceable · 95%1 product

The oldest construction still in production, and still correct for anchor rodes: it stretches, splices trivially, grips a windlass gypsy, and is cheap.

  • Anchor rode
  • Dock lines
  • Fender lines
  • General purpose

Splice efficiency assumes a correctly made splice with the full specified bury length. A short bury, a mismatched fid size or a splice made in a coated rope without preparation will all fall well below these figures.
