Schematic — Unidirectional core in a braided cover
Unidirectional HMPE core inside a 24-plait polyester cover. Load yarns run straight, not on a braid helix: almost no strength lost to geometry.
When to specify this
The answer when a dimension has to hold: standing rigging, crane pendants, guys, anything you will measure again and expect the same number.
Standard colours
White/Cobalt fleck · Black/Signal fleck · Steel Grey
Certification
Full spec sheet and batch test certificate supplied with every order, and on request beforehand.
Typical applications
Minimum break strength is the value we publish and test to — not an average, and not a working load. Divide by your design factor before putting a number on a drawing.
| Diameter | Min. break strength (lb) | Weight (lb/100 ft) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4" | 7,400 | 2.2 |
| 5/16" | 11,500 | 3.3 |
| 3/8" | 17,000 | 4.6 |
| 7/16" | 23,000 | 6.2 |
| 1/2" | 30,000 | 8 |
| 5/8" | 46,500 | 12.3 |
| 3/4" | 66,000 | 17.4 |
| 1" | 112,000 | 30.5 |
Working load shown at a 5:1 design factor for illustration only. Use the load calculator to apply the design factor, sling angle and termination efficiency your application actually requires.
Weights are nominal and vary ±5% with finish and coating. Elongation measured on new rope after bedding-in; expect higher values on the first cycle. Splice efficiency assumes a correctly made splice with the specified bury length.
Measured to 30% of MBS. Beyond that the curve is extrapolated from the fibre, and drawn dashed to say so.
Load vs. elongation
Vector-PC — stretch under load
Elongation as a percentage of original length, plotted against load as a percentage of minimum break strength. Drag, or focus the plot and use the arrow keys, to read any point off the curve.
| Load (% of MBS) | Elongation (%) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0 | Origin |
| 10 | 0.3 | Measured |
| 20 | 0.55 | Measured |
| 30 | 0.78 | Measured |
| 100 (break) | 3.5 | Extrapolated from HMPE elongation at break |
Break strength per pound of rope, across the catalogue. This is the number that decides what a two-person crew can rig.

STRENGTH-TO-WEIGHT — LB PER LB/100 FT
Break strength divided by weight per 100 ft, best size in each range. Numerically this is breaking length in hundreds of feet — the length of rope whose own weight equals its break strength.
